Rep. Kat Cammack of Florida spoke Tuesday on CNN’s Situation Room about campus responses to sexual assault reports, pointing to Cornell as an illustration of a persistent problem at universities.
She said colleges lack law-enforcement powers and often put institutional image ahead of people who come forward. Cammack described campus procedures as flawed, stressed that sexual assault is a crime requiring thorough inquiry, support for those harmed, fair treatment of the accused, real consequences, and no reprisals, and noted that survivor safeguards can exist alongside due process and equal opportunity for women.
She added that Title IX has drawn some discussion and that lawmakers should examine campus practices closely, even as her own work now targets reporting and inquiry rules on Capitol Hill.
