Michigan Republican Representative Tom Barrett told a Newsmax audience on Tuesday that Persian Gulf allies should assume primary responsibility for keeping the Hormuz waterway open to shipping.

Barrett noted that Congress has not authorized the fighting involving Iran. He supported War Powers measures that would force lawmakers either to approve the operations or to end them, which he said both the Constitution and the public require.

He also said Iran must be prevented from obtaining a nuclear weapon, an outcome he described as intolerable, while those same partners enforce the arrangements needed to restore passage through the strait.
