Republican Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska told CNN News Central on Wednesday that President Trump’s deportation approach falls short of the humanitarian and Christian standard most Americans expect.
Bacon said Republicans had won the immigration argument after voters backed them two to one to secure the border and remove violent criminals, a goal the president met. He argued the administration then shifted too far by removing people who entered legally, hold jobs, and contribute to their towns, including those with Temporary Protected Status, long-term residents with families and homes, and a young woman whose mother brought her in at age 16 after they presented themselves at the border. That woman learned English, graduated with honors from high school and college, earned a pilot license, and sought airline work before being sent away, which Bacon said offered no benefit.
He said most voters want secure borders without violence plus a middle-ground policy that keeps such contributors, and that the current swing from one pole to the other could damage Republicans in November.
