Gallego: Trump Views Servicemembers as ‘Toys’ to Show Off

Listen to Article

Sen. Ruben Gallego’s weekend broadside on ABC is the latest in a long line of Democratic attempts to paint President Trump as hostile to the military, yet the claim that he treats troops like “toys” collapses under even modest scrutiny. Trump’s record—historic pay raises, expanded authorities for battlefield commanders, and the creation of the Space Force—shows a commander-in-chief who invested political capital in the force, not in photo-ops. The “props” narrative also ignores that every modern president, including Obama and Biden, has staged military backdrops; the selective outrage only surfaces when the backdrop is a Trump rally or border visit.

For the Second-Amendment community, the stakes are larger than optics. The same voices branding Trump a militarist are the ones who spent the last decade pushing magazine bans, red-flag laws, and ATF pistol-brace rules that disproportionately affect veterans and reservists. If the left can successfully paint support for the troops as “showmanship,” they can justify trimming the very rights servicemembers rely on when they return to civilian life. The 2A base should treat Gallego’s talking point as a warning shot: any effort to delegitimize Trump’s military record is groundwork for renewed attacks on the individual right to keep and bear arms.
