French Far-Left Leader Claims ‘White, Christian’ France Never Existed

Listen to Article

In a move that would make Orwell blush, French far-left National Assembly member Clémentine Autain has declared that the very notion of a historic “white, Christian” France is nothing more than a far-right hallucination. By erasing centuries of demographic and cultural continuity—Gaul, the Franks, Clovis’s baptism, the cathedrals, the Revolution itself—she isn’t merely rewriting history; she’s handing every French citizen a blank slate on which any future identity can be projected. For Americans who still believe that culture and peoplehood are real, the episode is a warning label: when political elites decide that a nation’s founding stock is an optical illusion, every inherited right, including the right to keep and bear arms, becomes negotiable.

The 2A community should watch this rhetorical sleight-of-hand with special interest. France’s already suffocating gun laws rest on the premise that only the state can be trusted with force; once the historic French people are told they never existed, the state’s claim to that monopoly grows even harder to contest. The same linguistic trick—“you were never a distinct people, therefore your traditions of liberty don’t apply”—is already being auditioned in U.S. academic and media circles whenever the Second Amendment is framed as an embarrassing relic of “whiteness.” If the French precedent spreads, the next argument against shall-issue carry or constitutional carry won’t be crime statistics; it will be that the very Americans invoking the right are cultural appropriators of a document that supposedly wasn’t written for them.

What looks like an arcane French culture-war spat is therefore a live-fire exercise in demographic delegitimization. Lose the story of who you are, and you eventually lose the legal architecture that story produced—including the individual right to effective self-defense. The French left has given the world a concise demonstration: abolish the people first, then abolish their arms.
