Even Democrat Lawmakers Opposed ‘Barbaric’ Massachusetts Abortion Law

Listen to Article

Even nine Democrats in the Massachusetts legislature couldn’t stomach the new “reproductive health” statute that Governor Maura Healey signed this week, a measure so extreme it effectively green-lights the termination of a viable infant right up to the moment of birth. The bill’s opponents—both inside and outside the State House—called the policy “barbaric,” and their revulsion wasn’t partisan theater; it was a recognition that once the state asserts the power to declare a fully formed human being outside the zone of legal protection, every other natural right becomes negotiable. For the 2A community, that is the chilling takeaway: if a legislature can redefine when human life begins and ends to satisfy political fashion, it can just as easily redefine when and where the right to keep and bear arms begins and ends.

The same political class now celebrating this expansion of state power over life has already floated “public-health” rationales for confiscating firearms, limiting magazine capacity, and turning lawful carriers into felons overnight. When government can treat a child drawing its first breath as optional, the philosophical ground for treating your AR-15 as a constitutionally protected implement of self-defense erodes by the day. Grass-roots pro-2A activists who have long warned that “they’ll come for the guns after they come for the kids” are not trafficking in hyperbole; they are reading the logical through-line of a political movement that views rights as state-granted privileges rather than pre-political facts.

The Massachusetts episode should therefore serve as a five-alarm alert for every gun owner who still believes that culture-war battles are someone else’s concern. Law-abiding citizens who remain silent while the definition of personhood is rewritten are tacitly conceding that government may someday rewrite the definition of “militia,” “infringe,” or “shall not be.” The defense of the Second Amendment does not end at the gun counter; it runs through every legislative chamber where the value of human life is weighed against political expediency.
