The Department of Justice expanded its lawsuit against San Jose, California, on Tuesday. The original filing challenged a concealed carry permit fee of about 1600 dollars. The revised complaint also challenges a city rule requiring gun owners to carry liability insurance.
San Jose police said a local ordinance requires firearm owners to obtain and keep that coverage and to pay a yearly fee meant to reduce gun harm. The Justice Department groups the insurance mandate and the ordinance with abusive fees in the updated filing.
