The Department of Homeland Security posted on social media Monday criticizing New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul over New York’s response to federal immigration hold requests. From January 20, 2025, through October 8, 2026, the state declined 16,070 ICE detainers tied to 52,503 criminal charges and convictions, up from 14,766 the week before.

Secretary Markwayne Mullin said federal officers will keep making arrests even without local cooperation and that the administration will not be stopped by those policies. In March the department said jurisdictions nationwide had declined another 18,000 detainers. Earlier this year ICE said California had released 4,500 people convicted of murder, sexual assault, or child sex crimes after ignoring similar requests.
