Democratic Representative Suhas Subramanyam of Virginia told CNN on Thursday that he lacks confidence in the FBI and the Justice Department due to political influence. His office reported a letter showing the FBI had listened to some of his phone talks as part of a larger inquiry rather than a probe of him.

He said the FBI opened a case on state Senator Louise Lucas for leading the April redistricting referendum in Virginia and began monitoring every conversation she held beforehand. When Subramanyam spoke with her a few times, those talks were overheard. He questioned the timing a few months before the vote that Republicans opposed and whether politics drove the action, noting the agencies say they work for the president and must explain themselves.
