For Second Amendment supporters, that matters because the DSA’s platform calls for outright confiscation of “assault weapons,” universal registration, and the repeal of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. When a sitting Democrat publicly marginalizes that faction, it suggests the party’s electoral math still runs through suburban and rural moderates who own firearms and recoil at the DSA’s rhetoric.

The real test will come in primary season, where small, energized factions can punch above their weight in low-turnout contests.
