Dem Rep. Himes: Trump Is Trying to Compromise Elections

Listen to Article

Rep. Jim Himes’s accusation that President Trump is “compromising” the midterms is the latest chapter in a long-running Democratic narrative that treats any push for election integrity as an existential threat to democracy. In reality, the only concrete steps Trump has endorsed—voter ID requirements, same-day voting, and paper ballots—are the very safeguards that make it harder for urban political machines to manufacture margins in close races. For the 2A community, those machines have historically been the same ones that quietly green-light “may-issue” carry permits in deep-blue cities while publicly insisting that gun owners are the real danger to public safety. When Himes frames basic security as subversion, he is really warning that the old system of counting ballots without meaningful chain-of-custody is under pressure, and that pressure directly threatens the policy pipeline that has kept shall-issue reciprocity and national reciprocity legislation bottled up in committee.

The deeper implication is that Democrats are telegraphing their fallback strategy: if they cannot win outright, they will delegitimize the results in advance so that any subsequent Republican majority can be portrayed as illegitimate. That tactic has already been used to stall pro-2A legislation after 2016 and again after 2020; another round of “our democracy is ending” rhetoric will be deployed the moment gun-control measures fail to pass a narrowly divided House. Gun owners should therefore treat Himes’s comments not as idle hyperbole but as a signal that the institutional left intends to keep the electoral playing field tilted in its favor precisely because an honest count tends to produce legislatures less hostile to the right to keep and bear arms.
