Dem Rep. Chu: Lack of Affordable Care Act Subsidies Making Costs Rise, Part of What’s ‘Causing People to Suffer the Most’

Listen to Article

Rep. Judy Chu’s claim that the expiration of Affordable Care Act subsidies is the chief driver of skyrocketing premiums is a textbook case of Washington misdirection. The subsidies were never a permanent fix; they were a temporary patch on a system that already distorts prices through mandates, guaranteed-issue rules, and community rating. When those artificial supports vanish, the underlying cost curve—pushed upward by regulatory overhead and provider consolidation—reasserts itself. The result is sticker shock for middle-class families who don’t qualify for the remaining means-tested assistance, exactly the cohort that was promised “affordable care” a decade ago.

For the 2A community the lesson is straightforward: every new entitlement program competes for the same finite pool of taxpayer dollars that could otherwise fund constitutional carry training grants, school-security upgrades, or litigation defense for beleaguered gun owners. When premiums double or triple, discretionary income shrinks, and the first items many households cut are range fees, ammunition stockpiles, and Second Amendment–PAC donations. In other words, the same fiscal irresponsibility that inflates health-insurance costs also starves the infrastructure that keeps the right to keep and bear arms practical rather than theoretical.

The deeper implication is cultural. A citizenry that must beg the government for subsidies to afford basic medical coverage is less likely to view itself as independent actors capable of self-defense. Dependence and liberty are inversely related; the faster Congress normalizes the former, the harder it becomes to defend the latter when the next magazine ban or “assault weapon” restriction is proposed. Chu’s sound bite may play well on cable news, but the 2A grassroots understands that every dollar siphoned into unsustainable entitlements is one less round on the belt and one less vote that can be counted on when freedom is on the docket.
