On Monday, Texas Democrat Greg Casar appeared on NPR Morning Edition and argued that America should set its own artificial intelligence restrictions first, ahead of any pact with China.

He told co-host Leila Fadel that domestic measures would signal genuine interest in a bargain and that pairing them with export limits would retard risky development abroad, given that Chinese systems currently train on American ones.

Casar said the United States should protect its residents now while seeking worldwide accords, lead in both the technology and related diplomacy, and treat the coming United Nations gathering as a chance to prepare international blocks on extremely hazardous systems.
