Delaware Governor John Carney’s call to abolish ICE isn’t just another progressive talking point—it’s a direct assault on the rule of law that 2A advocates have long warned would bleed into every other constitutional right. When elected officials label entire immigrant communities as “victims” of a system designed to enforce borders, they’re laying the groundwork for the same logic that paints lawful gun owners as the problem rather than the criminals who misuse firearms. The governor’s rhetoric conveniently ignores that ICE’s mission—identifying, detaining, and removing individuals who violate immigration statutes—is no different in principle from the background-check and permitting regimes that states already impose on the exercise of the Second Amendment; both are exercises of sovereign authority, and both are now under coordinated attack.
The timing is no accident. As sanctuary jurisdictions multiply and federal immigration enforcement is demonized, the same activists are already testing the waters for parallel campaigns against ATF, the NFA, and even the very concept of armed self-defense. If ICE can be branded an illegitimate agency whose agents are fair game for obstruction, the precedent is set for labeling ATF agents or local sheriffs who enforce shall-issue permitting as “out of control.” Gun owners who have watched decades of incremental restrictions know this pattern: first you delegitimize the enforcement arm, then you delegitimize the underlying right itself.
For the 2A community the lesson is straightforward—immigration enforcement and the right to keep and bear arms are two fronts in the same battle over whether government exists to protect citizens or to manage them. When a sitting governor publicly cheers the dissolution of a federal law-enforcement agency, it signals that the Overton window has shifted far enough for similar calls against every other agency that stands between an armed citizen and a disarmed one. The response isn’t to retreat into single-issue silos; it’s to recognize that a nation unwilling to secure its borders will have even less compunction about securing—or eliminating—your firearms.
