Margaret Cho’s claim that America is committing a “trans genocide” is the kind of rhetorical inflation that collapses the moment you look at the numbers: the CDC’s own data show transgender-identifying Americans are a fraction of one percent of the population, and the overwhelming majority of them are alive, employed, and politically organized. What Cho is really objecting to is the growing list of state laws that simply restore biological sex as the relevant category for prisons, shelters, and youth medicine—measures that enjoy majority support in every recent poll. By labeling ordinary democratic push-back “genocide,” she converts policy disagreement into moral emergency, a tactic that crowds out any discussion of the documented risks of puberty blockers, the Cass Review’s findings in the UK, or the detransition lawsuits now moving through U.S. courts.

For the 2A community the episode is instructive. The same rhetorical move—declaring dissenters an existential threat—has already been used to justify “red-flag” gun confiscation orders and campus speech codes. When Cho equates legislative caution with mass murder, she hands activists a precedent: if disagreement equals genocide, then any tool, including gun control, becomes morally obligatory to stop it. Gun owners have watched this pattern before; every time a social issue is escalated from debate to apocalypse, the Second Amendment is the next domino. The prudent response is to insist that words keep their meaning and that policy disputes be settled by evidence, not by turning the thesaurus into a weapon.
