Chris Christie Accuses Trump of Engaging in ‘Putin-Esque Type of Corruption’

Listen to Article

Chris Christie’s latest broadside against Donald Trump, branding the former president’s conduct as “Putin-esque” corruption, lands with the same thud as every other Never-Trump talking point: it ignores the actual record on the Second Amendment while recycling the same Beltway outrage script. Trump’s administration delivered the most consequential pro-2A policy wins in a generation—confirming three originalist Supreme Court justices who handed down Bruen, ending the Obama-era bump-stock ban through regulatory reversal, and pushing ATF nominees who at least slowed the agency’s slide into outright prohibitionism. Christie, by contrast, governed a state that still treats shall-issue carry as a radical concept and never lifted a finger to roll back New Jersey’s magazine bans or “assault-weapon” restrictions. When a politician whose own record is thin on rights restoration suddenly invokes foreign-dictator analogies, the 2A community rightly asks: which side actually moved the needle on constitutional carry, national reciprocity efforts, and protecting the industry from lawfare?

The deeper implication is that this kind of rhetoric is designed to delegitimize any future Trump-aligned administration before it can finish the work of dismantling the administrative state’s gun-control apparatus. Christie’s “self-enrichment” charge conveniently sidesteps the fact that the real long-term enrichment for the gun-control lobby comes from perpetual litigation, regulatory whiplash, and the steady criminalization of commonplace firearms ownership. If the goal is to paint support for the right to keep and bear arms as somehow corrupt or authoritarian, then every pro-2A voter, donor, and industry stakeholder becomes collateral damage in a purity spiral that ultimately benefits only those who want to keep the regulatory status quo intact. The 2A community has learned to measure politicians by results on the ground—shall-issue reforms, suppressor deregulation pushes, and resistance to red-flag overreach—not by cable-news soundbites comparing domestic political opponents to foreign strongmen.
