California Republican Assemblyman Carl DeMaio said he is preparing a court challenge to a statute Governor Gavin Newsom signed last week that takes effect October 1. The law, nicknamed the Stop Nick Shirley Act and formally called Privacy For Immigration Support Services Providers, shields addresses of immigration support providers, staff, and volunteers and penalizes posting their photos on social media.

DeMaio said the measure would stop independent investigators from filming alleged taxpayer fraud and sharing the videos online. He said a group of civil liberties advocates has a plaintiff and is drafting filings, and that they have discussed the case with the Justice Department in hopes it will join on First Amendment grounds.

DeMaio also said California groups that receive public funds often fail to deliver promised immigrant services and instead stage rallies, collect ballots, and back candidates, a problem he called larger than Minnesota child care cases highlighted by influencer Nick Shirley.
