TV Globo cancelled Thursday’s planned closing presidential debate after Brazil’s electoral court and Supreme Court insisted on format changes. The country votes Sunday, October 4, with 13 candidates on the ballot, mainly pitting President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva against Senator Flavio Bolsonaro.
Lula refused to take part. Agreed rules called for leaving his lectern vacant and labeled; hours beforehand Justice Estela Aranha of the Superior Electoral Tribunal banned that arrangement.
Bolsonaro then declined to appear in protest and instead outlined his plans during a two-hour YouTube livestream.
