If the left insists that verifying citizenship is somehow voter suppression, they are conceding that their coalition depends on ballots cast by people who cannot legally cast them. For the 2A community, the parallel is obvious: the same forces that want to register citizens before they can exercise a constitutional right are suddenly allergic to registering citizens before they pick the people who write the gun laws.
