Land acknowledgments have become more frequent lately among left-leaning entertainers and news figures, drawing mixed reviews from Native Americans who frequently see little real value.

Reid Walker of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation expressed strong irritation in the New York Times, noting Native ties focused on mutual duty instead of legal control. Apsáalooke artist Wendy Red Star called territory a European overlay on Native caretaking. Walker supports only acknowledgments that engage tribes and prompt later steps, since brief remarks fail to address long histories of loss.
