President Donald Trump on Friday night accused New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman of inventing a report that he would skip a Ground Zero September 11 ceremony because organizers would not let him speak and would instead appear at the Pentagon. He said New York commemorations are solemn events without speeches, that he had never considered speaking there, and that the occasion should honor victims and their families.

Trump added that lawsuits against the newspaper and the Pulitzer organization would show her unnamed sources either do not exist or did not make the statements attributed to them, and that she has reported falsely about him for years. Haberman’s article cited people with knowledge of the events who were not named.

CNN host Jake Tapper declined to repeat Trump’s remarks, described Haberman as a great person, mother, wife, colleague and journalist, and called the comments disgusting and beneath the office.
